BAD TRIP
[A szöveg csak angol nyelven érhető el] The BAD TRIP project presents a narrative immersive audiovisual installation through an immersive experience that can serve as a conversation starter about generation gaps and the traumas they cause. We talk very little about them, yet they are part of our lives. The viewer follows the protagonist through a 'bad trip-like' series of events through the levels of a family house, where he gets deeper and deeper, not only into the levels of the house, but also into himself. The project also aims to have a community-building effect and helps to accept and self-reflect on the subject.

The installation already had its debut at Hungarian House of Music's soundome. The immersive space allows us to take the participants into
the location of the story, which makes the experience even more intense and personal.

Synopsis:
A lonely young man begins to gloomily explore the memories of his childhood home, signs of his bad habits scattered around the house. After examining a family photo a strange creature appears and takes him back to his childhood, to the time the photo was taken. After recalling the memory more and more creatures appear. Following these creature through the levels of his home, he also drives deep in his (sub)consciousness and he is confronted with the gaps and dysfunctionality that span his life in a bad trip like series of events. As he goes deeper and deeper, he must also confront the crux of the problem.

The project was made by animation and art & design management students of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design and was funded by the National Cultural Fund of Hungary.

Ami szükséges

The project is optimized for the sound dome of Hungarian House of Music, the technical details of which can be found in the document at the link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Zi54wUSm-xEHd374uoS9Zkl0iGee2fm4?usp=share_link

We can technically adapt it to other circumstances or location based on consultation.

Amit a művészek hoznak

Emese's grandparents' house became the backdrop for the story, thanks to thousands of images and some AI and 3D post-production work. In contrast, the characters were created using 2D collage techniques, creating a dual flat-space effect with the background. This gave the characters their own 'crumpled', unfinished look, which further enhanced the assemblage style of the installation. The 2D collage animations were inserted into the 3D space, where they interacted with their surroundings and the 3D animated creatures. After rendering the animations into equirectangular footage we used After Effects to bend the equirectangular images, the standard format of VR and 360° cameras, onto the surface of the Sound Dome, and then we animated, distorted, coloured and inserted the scenes according to the narrative. The process required a high degree of precision, as the huge size of the dome would have made any errors more visible.
